“Las Musicas,” a tonadilla (intermezzo) by Blas de Laserna recently brought to light and edited by Foundling principal cellist, musicologist Elisabeth Le Guin, is the centerpiece of the concert. This is broad satire, using music to poke fun at the very people who would have been its original audience! The singer (soprano Pamela Murray), accompanied by strings, winds, and guitar, describes people who would have been familiar “types” recognizable to an 18th-century Madrid audience, and selects a style of music that best shows his or her foibles. The resultant Fandangos, Boleros, Marches, and so on, would draw cheers and catcalls from the audience. The Diva was expected to master all of this chaos and deliver the songs with aplomb. This was all done between the acts of a drama, probably a tragedy
--and may have been the main reason some attended the theater.
